Colored belt testing is scheduled monthly.
There are 10 Gups, starting from the 10th Gup (white belt) and ending with the 1st Gup (red-black belt, also known as a deputy black belt). The term "Gup" means degree and indicates a colored belt. A 9th Gup (Yellow belt) should know how to properly tie a belt.
The term "Dan" means phase and is represented by a black belt. There are 9 Dan degrees, starting with the first and ending with the 9th. The black belt's Dan is indicated on his/her belt by a stripe. A first degree Dan has one stripe, a second degree Dan has two stripes, etc.

Symbolism: In World TaeKwon Do there are 10 Gups, starting at 10th Gup (white belt) and ending with 1st Gup (deputy black belt). The term "Gup" means degree. The term "Dan" means phase. There are 9 Dan degrees, starting with the first and ending with the 9th. All Dan-degrees are represented by a black belt.
- White Belt (10th Gup)
- The color white indicates innocence, purity, and no knowledge of TaeKwon Do. The white-belt is automatically gained by taking TaeKwon Do classes.
- The color yellow represents the rising sun, which causes newly sown seeds to germinate and begin to grow. It indicates that the person is getting to know the basic techniques.
- The color orange represents the sun-deepening in color as it rises in the sky, giving its energy to the new growth. The students techniques begin to take form.
- The color green indicates growing of things driving upward. Power begins to develop. The color of the belt is compared to a plant growing its leafs.
- The color blue indicates that a student is reaching higher, like a plant that is growing toward the sky. Mental and Physical power begins to stabilize.
- 1st & 2nd Brown Belts represent the color of the earth in which growing things are rooted. Mental and physical powers stabilize.
- Red is the color of blood, the essential force in life. Perfection of character begins to be exhibited by maturity, honor and respect.
- All colors combined. The final stage when mastery of technique is reflected by calm dignity and sincerity.
Poom
- The World TaeKwon Do Federation requires that one has to be 16 years old to get a black belt. If younger, the student gets a Poom, which can be replaced by a black belt when passed the age of 16. The requirements are the same as for the black belt.
- Black is the opposite of white and means the maturity of the student in the art. It also is an indication of being impenetrable for fear and darkness.
